For 200 million euros:
BMW equips parent plant for the i4
With the electric car i4 BMW wants to attack Tesla. First,
however, the tapes in the
Munich headquarters have to be adjusted. And that is not cheap.
BMW concept iNext: The Munich plant is being prepared for the
production of the i4.
BMW is preparing the series production of the all- electric Tesla
competitor BMW i4
in Munich and is rebuilding its main plant for 200 million euros .
Since October runs in Munich, the new BMW threes by the minute by
the tape; From
2021 on the same lines and the four-door electric coupe to be
built i4, as plant
manager Robert Engelhorn said on Tuesday. The conversion of the
lines during
production is "a real Herculean task" .
The threes and the i4 have the same platform. However, in the body
of the electric
car several thousand other components and stronger carrier for the
more than 500
kilograms heavy batteries in the ground must be installed.
In the factory more than 1000 robots in the body shop and in the
assembly must be
rebuilt accordingly. "Maximum flexibility" in car production is
extremely important in
order to be able to build combustion, hybrid and electric cars on
the same volume,
according to customer demand, Engelhorn said.
Today, the 8,000 employees of the Munich factory build around
1,000 BMW three-
limousines and sedans and four-seater coupes and 2,000 petrol
engines every day at
the Olympic Stadium .
In assembly, the number of employees with the electric cars should
remain at a
similar level, said Engelhorn. But engine construction employs
2000 people - and the
electric motors for the i4 will come from the Dingolfing BMW plant
in Lower Bavaria.
With high demand for the i4 could also be built in the future,
more threes in China or
in the new BMW plant in Mexico, which will go into operation after
three years of
construction in April.
Munich goes "in the full"
Next year, however, the Munich plant will go "in the full," said
Engelhorn. With the
run-up of the new threesome and the start of the three-plug-in
hybrid in mid-2019,
the annual production of this year from nearly 200,000 cars to
230,000 cars to be
raised .
US competitor Tesla drives after enormous startup problems just
the production of
its electric car Model 3 high and wants to bring it from February
in Europe for 58,000
euros on the market.
Engelhorn sees BMW well on course to sell 140,000 hybrid and pure
e-cars this year.
"That makes us number one in Europe," he emphasized. BMW is
currently the world's
number three behind the Chinese carmaker BYD and Tesla .
The i4 should have a range of up to 600 kilometers. After built in
2013 in Leipzig
small car i3 and planned for 2020, built in China electric SUV BMW
iX3, the i4 will be
the third electric BMW and 2021 simultaneously with the new
flagship of the group,
the all-electric and highly autonomous SUV SUV BMW iNext from
Dingolfing, go in
series. (dpa / mer)

emplea a 2000
200,000 a 230,000
(dpa / mer)
